Let’s Check Your Options

Eight questions to organize your next step. No contact details needed.

General information, not legal advice. This check does not determine eligibility, rule out a claim, calculate a deadline, file a complaint, or create an attorney-client relationship.

Does This Sound Familiar?

These situations may call for a closer look. The facts, documents, and applicable law matter.

A Debt You Question

The amount looks wrong, the account is unfamiliar, or the debt may already be paid.

Troubling Collection Messages

Threats, repeated contacts, or misleading statements may need review under the rules that apply.

Court Papers Arrive

A lawsuit is separate from a collection dispute. Do not ignore the court’s response deadline.

What a Review May Clarify

The appropriate path depends on your circumstances. No outcome is promised.

Which Protections Apply

The collector’s role, type of debt, and conduct affect the analysis. Federal protections and California’s Rosenthal Act do not have identical coverage.

A Response Strategy

Review may address a dispute, communication limits, a lawsuit response, or available remedies. Challenging collection conduct does not automatically erase the debt.

Questions You May Have

Does a dispute pause all collection?

A timely written dispute during the federal validation period can require a covered collector to pause collection of the disputed debt until verification is provided. Coverage, timing, and what you sent matter.

Can I ignore a lawsuit while I dispute the debt?

No. A collection dispute does not replace a response to a lawsuit. Have the actual court papers and deadline reviewed promptly.
